From July 10th-12th 2017, Bath Spa University will hosting the . This event brings together writers, artists, educators and media practitioners to explore where storytelling and media creation intersect with technology.  This year, Paper Nations has teamed up with to contribute to the Regeneration stand which celebrates young writers and the future of creative writing including new directions, hybrid forms and possibilities offered by new technological platforms and tools.

At the end of 2016, Paper Nations put out a call to writers and artists in order to commission a new literary artwork for the conference. The brief was a piece of work that would showcase original writing by young people through Bath Spa University’s MediaWall a uniquely positioned digital gallery space consisting of a large set of 55 inch screens viewable in daylight.

To mark the start of the countdown to MIX 2017, we’re delighted to announce as the winner of this year’s Media Wall competition.  Their winning proposal is a piece of interactive art, providing a flexible and visually compelling platform for young people to collaborate on the writing and editing of an original novel in real time.

eQuality Time is a social enterprise which develops tech-inspired solutions to social problems. Founded by Joe Reddington, in 2009 eQuality Time launched a literacy project that enables groups of up to ten school-age writers to write and publish their own novel within five days.

During MIX 2017 the digital gallery space of the MediaWall will be transformed into a working wall, exhibiting in-progress work by a group of ten writers from Bath Community Academy. These students will create their own work of fiction using the White Water Writers novel writing process. An animation displayed on the MediaWall will visualise the lifecycle of this novel, becoming part of the young people’s editing process and showcasing their collaborative writing as it evolves. Copies of the finished novel will be available to purchase on Amazon immediately after MIX closes.

We are hugely excited about this partnership with eQuality Time on the MediaWall as it fits with Paper Nation’s emphasis on celebrating the cultural value of creative writing.  We will also be working with eQuality Time to build and test models of best practice for embedding digital writing outreach programmes in schools for future programmes. With that in mind, this event also marks the launch of an associated online platform which will showcase and facilitate original writing from schools across the South West.  More details on this coming soon!
